The Sacred Medical Order of Hope (SMOKH)

The Sacred Medical Order of Hope SMOKH is a medical, religious order associated with the Christian church. As an ecumenical Order, membership of the Sacred Medical Order is by invitation to both men and women who are of good character and standing in their community, want to learn about their sacred medicines, and who wish to help relieve and reduce the number of people suffering from ill health. I am proud to say that I am a member of SMOKH.

SMOKH has many members from diverse fields. Now in its fifth year of development and growth, focus is typically on education and preparedness.

This is a list of SMOKH's mission as outlined on their website:

  1. To disseminate the healing principles of the pastoral mission and function as a Church, being a religious society to receive, preserve, and propagate His doctrines and ordinances. ?
  2. To preserve and disseminate the sacred medical teachings, the Sacred Scripture and divine Traditions of our forefathers - to be preserved, guarded, cataloguing, digitally preserving, and disseminating rapidly disappearing medical texts and scripture.
  3. To sanction, direct, and govern our member practitioners.
  4. To establish, equip, staff and maintain humanitarian relief and medical treatment centres and hospitals.
  5. To promote and participate in all phases of education of practitioners, physicians, therapists, nursing staff, paramedical and nutritional care personnel.
  6. To raise relief funds for all of these humanitarian, organizational, and medical needs.
  7. To promote peace and prosperity, by diplomacy, cooperation and consensus.
  8. To cooperate with IGO's Intergovernmental Organizations, NGO's Non-governmental Organizations, and Governmental Organizations for purposes humanitarian and medical needs.

To give a bit of the background on the beliefs of the organization distinguished Christian writers and scholars, and the Fathers of the Church in the early centuries paid a lot of attention to medical care. In monastic medicine, diagnosis and the taxonomy of illness were central. Diagnosis in the medieval literature was called discernment diakrisis.

Discernment was to differentiate an illness caused by demons or one caused by natural elements. Discernment also was important to identify malingers who would pretend illness in order to receive food and shelter.

Primarily SMOKH help to develop the services of Pastoral health care. They estimate that there is a shortage of approximately 4.3 million medical practitioners worldwide. This shortage can to some extend be supported through pastoral health practitioners. Pastoral Medicine can be defined as: application and use of the health sciences for the purpose of applying them in pastoral functions and in the explanation and support of the teachings of faith and morals. Pastoral Medicine has for its object the prevention and treatment of contagious disease, somatic illness, mental disease, nervous disorders disease due to occupation, drug addiction and rendering first aid to the injured.
